Our CEO, Jillian Laing, recently visited the growing countries of South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi and Kenya. The growth of the industry was very evident here with significant new tree plantings, often replacing tobacco, coffee and sugar cane. There were many examples of leading-edge farming practices, with consideration given to soil health, pollination, smart water use, and solar and biomass for energy. The farming systems ranged from large plantations to around one hectare of mixed farming (“small holdings”), where macadamias are an important cash crop. There were also world class processing facilities for kernel and oil, and many people who are very passionate about macadamias.
